Description

Decadent chocolate bars topped with a creamy caramel layer.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup melted unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups milk
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp water
  • ¼ cup coconut cream
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: lemon/orange zest
  • Optional: chocolate shavings

Instructions

  1. Whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt together.
  2. Mix melted butter and brown sugar in a bowl.
  3. Add eggs and vanilla; mix until smooth.
  4. Fold dry ingredients into wet until combined.
  5. Spread batter in an 8×8 pan and bake for 18–20 minutes at 175°C. Cool completely.
  6. In a saucepan, whisk milk, sugar, and cornstarch together.
  7. Add egg yolks and cook over medium heat, whisking constantly until thick, smooth, and pudding-like.
  8. Remove from heat; stir in butter and vanilla.
  9. Pour over cooled chocolate base and chill for 1 hour.
  10. Heat sugar and water in a saucepan without stirring until it reaches a deep amber color.
  11. Remove from heat; whisk in coconut cream and salt until smooth.
  12. Cool slightly until pourable but thick.
  13. Pour caramel over the chilled cream layer.
  14. Sprinkle with citrus zest or chocolate shavings if desired.
  15. Chill for 2–3 hours until fully set.
  16. Slice into bars and serve.

  • Make sure to let the bars cool completely before slicing for the best texture.
