Description

Enjoy your flaky sausage roll pastries!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound sausage meat or sausages
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
  • Flour (for dusting)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare Sausages: If using sausage meat, divide into equally sized portions. If using whole sausages, make sure they are cooked and cooled.
  3. Prepare Puff Pastry: Lightly dust your counter with flour. Roll out the puff pastry into a rectangle, about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into strips wide enough to wrap around the sausage.
  4. Assemble Rolls: Optionally spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on each pastry strip for extra flavor. Place a sausage or portion of sausage meat onto each strip of puff pastry. Roll the pastry around the sausage, sealing the edges with a little beaten egg.
  5. Egg Wash: Mix the beaten egg with the optional milk. Brush this mixture over the top of each roll to ensure a golden finish.
  6. Bake: Arrange the sausage rolls on the prepared baking sheet with enough space between them. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Serve: Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the puff pastry is cold before rolling to prevent it from becoming too soft.
  • For extra flavor, consider adding herbs or spices such as thyme or paprika to the sausage meat.
  • These can be made in advance and frozen before baking. Simply bake from frozen, allowing a few extra minutes in the oven.
