Description

Delicious homemade beef burger patties with melty cheese and optional toppings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 beef burger patties (80/20 ground beef, pre-shaped or homemade)
  • 4 slices American cheese (or your choice of melty cheese)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter or oil (for the pan)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional toppings: grilled onions, pickles, mustard, or sugar-free ketchup

Instructions

  1. Heat the skillet: Start by heating a cast iron skillet or heavy-bottomed pan over medium-high heat. Add butter or oil to coat the surface.
  2. Season and cook the patties: Season each side of your beef patties with salt and black pepper. Place them in the hot skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, depending on thickness and your preferred doneness.
  3. Add the cheese: Once the patties are almost done, place a slice of cheese on each one. Cover the skillet briefly with a lid to let the cheese melt thoroughly—about 1 minute.
  4. Stack and serve: Now comes the fun part. Stack one cheesy patty on top of another, cheese-side in. This gives you two beefy layers with gooey cheese in the middle. For a true Flying Dutchman experience, skip the bun entirely.
  5. Add toppings if desired: Top with grilled onions, a few pickle slices, or a squirt of mustard. Serve hot and dig in with a fork and knife—or just embrace the mess and eat it with your hands.

Notes

  • Adjust the seasoning to your taste.
  • Feel free to experiment with different cheese types for variety.
  • These patties can also be made on a grill for added flavor.
