Description

A comforting and creamy potato gratin made with layers of thinly sliced potatoes, onions, and rich Gruyère cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups thinly sliced Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 2 large yellow onions, sliced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 ½ cups shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or to taste)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Stir in heavy cream and garlic; simmer for a few minutes.
  4. In the prepared baking dish, layer half of the potato slices. Pour half of the onion-cream mixture over them. Sprinkle with cheese. Repeat layers finishing with cheese on top.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 60 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15-20 minutes until bubbly and golden.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of nutmeg to the cream mixture.
  • Let the dish rest for a few minutes before serving to allow it to set.
